The Pisgah Office of College Advisement took its first "college road trip" from February 17 - 19th. Forty sophomores and juniors, along with chaperones Bryan Smyth, Karen Vernon, Leslie Head, and Andrew Jones, traveled by chartered bus to five colleges in South Carolina: Clemson University, Furman University, Presbyterian College, University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston. At each school, the group was given a guided tour by current students, and even had the opportunity to have lunch in the dining halls on two of the campuses.
The group also met up with Pisgah alums Patrick Van Stee, Tyler Fitzgerald, Sarah Ann Hunt and Drew Jordan, who are currently attending some of these colleges. This trip was so popular, the forty spaces were quickly filled and there was even a waiting list! It was a huge success, as the students explored five very different schools and learned about different types of campuses and locations. Organizers say this is the first of what they hope to be many college road trips for Pisgah students, (they are already exploring itinerary possibilities in North Carolina and Tennessee).
“This trip was a good start to the process of considering the right college," said sophomore Alex Vernon. For juniors, many of whom have already visited some campuses, the trip was also about finding out what it takes to gain acceptance to some of these colleges and to help narrow down the search. As Carly Morris said, "This was a great way to find out which of these schools I want to go back to and visit more in-depth.”
The college administrators had high praise for the Pisgah students, “The tour I just gave to the students from Alpharetta was perhaps my best of the year. The students were very attentive, well-behaved, and especially interactive. They asked a lot of great questions and seemed genuinely interested!” said Nancy Griffeth, Admissions Guest Coordinator at Furman University.
